JavaScript (JS) is a prototype-based scripting language that is dynamic, weakly typed, and supports first-class functions. It adopts a multi-paradigm approach, enabling object-oriented, imperative, and functional programming styles. Formalized under the ECMAScript standard, JS is predominantly utilized in client-side applications embedded within web browsers to enhance user interfaces and facilitate dynamic webpage content. This allows programmatic interaction with computational objects within a host environment.

Beyond traditional web applications, JS finds significant use in PDF documents, site-specific browsers, and desktop widgets. The evolution of faster JS virtual machines (VMs) and frameworks such as Node.js has expanded its reach into server-side web development.

JS's syntax is influenced by C language conventions. Despite sharing many names and conventions with Java, the two languages differ markedly in semantics. The design principles of JS draw inspiration from Self and Scheme programming languages.

Developed initially by Brendan Eich at Netscape under the name Mocha, later renamed LiveScript before becoming JavaScript—primarily due to its perceived connection with Java—the language has undergone several changes since its inception. LiveScript debuted in beta with Netscape Navigator 2.0 in September 1995; it was renamed JS in December 1995 to coincide with supporting Java integration in Netscape Navigator. This branding choice caused some confusion regarding its relationship with Java but was partly motivated by co-marketing strategies involving Netscape and Sun Microsystems.

Netscape submitted JS to Ecma International in 1996 for standardization; this effort led to the creation of ECMAScript—the standardized specification of JS used today across multiple platforms and environments.
